August is going to be about Women

August, one of my favorite months, for obvious reasons, will be dedicated to Women!

Writers' Row, August 10th, will feature all Women Writers!

Some of our guests are still being determined, but a few to add to the August calendar include:

Poetic Diversity Editor, Marie Lecrivain
Marie Lecrivain is the executive editor and publisher of poeticdiversity: the litzine of Los Angeles, a Pushcart Prize nominee, and is a writer in residence in her apartment. Her work has appeared in Askew Poetry Journal, Re)verb, Sex and Murder Magazine,The Los Angeles Review, The Poetry Salzburg Review, and is forthcoming in Heavy Hands Ink, and Illumen. Marie's new short story collection, Bitchess, (copyright 2011 Sybaritic Press), will be released in August 2011. 

Poet and Doctor, Melissa Alvarado
Melissa is a former editor and reviewer for Nebraska Territory and is co-founder of Broken Bottle Press, which publishes the literary magazine The Three Legged Cat. Her work has been published inSuisun Valley Review (Spring 2008), Plains Song Review, where she received the award for best undergraduate work in 2002. She has also been published in the Minnesota River Review, in the anthology Times of Sorrow, Times of Grace (Backwaters Press), and has work forthcoming in Toronto Quarterly, the anthology The World According to Goldfish (Goldfish Press), Poetry Warrior, and in an as yet untitle anthology from Secret Press USA, representing Nebraska. She received her PharmD in Pharmacy from Creighton's School of Pharmacy and Health Professions in May of 2006, but is pursing a career in teaching and writing instead.

Apryl Skies

Apryl Skies, author of A Song Beneath Silence is the Sherman Oaks Poetry Examiner and a strong voice in the poetry community. Skies expresses her devotion to the written word with a quiet intensity and is dedicated to preserving the integrity of poetics in art, culture and community. Taking an artistic approach to contemporary publishing Skies features work from poets and artists on her websitewww.edgarallanpoet.com, an international literary archive.








Plus...book release party for Poet Georgia Jones-Davis!!!

Georgia Jones-Davis grew up in Northern New Mexico and Southern California.  She wrote and published poetry while a student at UCLA.  After a discouraging poetry workshop experience she spent more than twenty years avoiding poets and poetry as she pursued a career as a literary journalist.  She worked as a staff writer, editor and book reviewer for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and was an Assistant Book Editor for the Los Angeles Times Book Review for fourteen years.

  After leaving the news business poetry, she says, came home like a long, lost muddy dog. It took a lot of grooming and coaxing to get back into the poetry show ring.

Georgia's work has appeared in Westwind, Brevities, The Bicycle Review, The California Quarterly,  Sam Hamill's website Poets Against War,  poetic diversity and South Bank Poetry (London.)

She is a co-director of Valley Contemporary Poets and was honored as one of the six Newer Poets 2010 by the Los Angeles Poetry Festival and Beyond Baroque in connection with the Los Angeles County Library's ALOUD  series.  Georgia's poem "Emily at Auschwitz" was nominated for the Dzanc anthology, "Best on the Web 2010."

"Blue Poodle" is Georgia's first book.

It would be amazing to have a 100% female open mic, well, at least 80%. I want to be fair to some of the talented writers out there that were not lucky enough to be female :)
